Reminders of Meblourne's cable trams

Although.the last Melbourne cable tram ceased running on 26th October 1940, reminders of the cable tram system continued to exist. This page aims to show some of those reminders that serve as mute testament to a once large cable tramway system.

The Fitzroy Engine House at the corner of Nicholson Street and Gertrude Street, Fitzroy is one of the most famous reminders of the cable tram system. This close up view shows the small tower on the corner of the building. This engine house would have operated right up to the close of the system, as the last route ran to Northcote past this location. Image taken 9 December 2000.

The depot for the Clifton Hill cable tram line (later extended to Northcote) was located in Queens Parade, Clifton Hill. This depot served as a small bus depot for the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board. The site has since been redeveloped for other uses, although it partly remains in use for tramway purposes as evidenced by the tramway substation on the right which was built for the opening of electric trams along this section in 1955. Note the architectural decorations above the child care centre banner which are similar to the decoration visible above the doorway on the Fitzroy Engine House. Image taken December 2000.

Cable tram reminder

A cable tram line independent of the main cable tram system was constructed along High Street, Northcote from Clifton Hill to Northcote. This line was taken over by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board in February 1920 and later incorporated into the main cable tram system. This line was the last cable tram line to close. This picture shows the former cable tram Depot in High Street, Northcote, which now serves as a motor vehicle accident repair business. Image taken during 2000.

This image shows the former North Melbourne engine house at the corner of Queensberry Street and Abbotsford Street, North Melbourne. This engine house served both the West Melbourne and North Melbourne lines. It was built in 1889 and ceased operation in 1935. Image taken 9 December 2000.

Cable tram reminder

Until the 1970's, the tramway junction at the corner of Flinders Street and Market Street, City contained a small section of former cable tram track, as evidenced by the central slot, visible in this picture.
